Why buy Steinbacher Geese?
In the fourth of our ‘Why Buy’ articles, we will be writing about the beautiful Stienbacher Geese. Fully grown and weighing in at anything between 5 to 7kg the free range Steinbacher Geese that we sell, become very tame when hand reared and regularly handled. Very easy to fall in love with, purely as they are beautiful big birds, they are quite nosey and love to chat amongst each other. The goslings particularly are a friendly lot, being quite curious and enjoying plenty of human contact. The best thing about this breed is the temperament since these are one of the tamest, most amenable geese you will find and very confident around people, they make excellent pets.
The origins of the Steinbacher Goose
The Steinbacher was probably first introduced to the UK from Germany in the 1980s, originating in former East Germany as a cross-breed of the local geese with the Asiatic Chinese. It may also have been bred from a cross with the Tula – the Russian fighting goose. The Tula itself was bred as a cross between the western greylag types from Europe and the eastern birds developed from the swan goose. Either way, the Steinbacher is a fusion of eastern and western blood, but is a truly unique breed.
Looking after your Steinbacher Geese
Although bred as a fighting goose, the Steinbacher has a calm confident temperament as a pet. However, when kept with other geese, the ganders should be isolated from other ganders in separate pens during the breeding season as the males then will show their fighting heritage with ganders becoming known for their aggressive protection of their mates and subsequent young. Steinbacher Geese enjoy lazing around in the sunshine and like a good splash about in the water too.
How many eggs will your Steinbacher Goose lay?
The geese are not particularly good layers, but you can still expect anything between 30 to 50 a year and their eggs are comparatively easy to hatch in incubators. Steinbacher Geese are also good sitters and excellent mothers.
